GHK-Cu Research: Copper Binding & Fibroblast Models

Understand the distinction between GHK and GHK-Cu, a primary fibroblast-culture study, and the limits of translating cellular findings into product claims.

What is GHK-Cu?

GHK is the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine and has affinity for copper(II). GHK-Cu refers to its copper-associated form. The chemical identity matters when comparing research on the peptide with research on the complex.

A primary laboratory study

Maquart and colleagues reported an effect of GHK-Cu on collagen synthesis in fibroblast cultures in 1988. The paper addresses a cellular endpoint under specified experimental conditions; it is not a general demonstration of clinical benefit.

Why the model matters

A culture assay measures activity in a controlled system. It does not reproduce every feature of intact tissue, a formulated product or a human exposure. Formulation and material identity should therefore remain separate questions from the observed assay result.

Reading related literature

Check whether the authors studied GHK, a copper complex, or another copper-containing material. Record the model, endpoint and controls. Do not assume that all articles using the phrase copper peptide studied identical substances.
